THENETNG PUBLISHES 65 PEOPLE, PLACES, EVENTS AND THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR IN 2012

resh, New Year for us to rock and roll, isn’t it? All of 12 sweet months for us enjoy. But the year 2012 means different things to different people.
Depending on who and where you are, the new year could bring excitement, landmark opportunities, loads of new music, movies, books and gadgets,  long-needed inventions, change in living conditions, and, we pray not, calamities.
We don’t want anxiety to overwhelm you – so our editors got together to compile you a list of some of the key people we think will rule the year. How ’bout that?
1. 2012 PHENOMENON
The 2012 phenomenon comprises a range of eschatological beliefs, according to which cataclysmic or transformative events will occur on December 21, 2012. Various astronomical alignments and numerological formulae related to this date have been proposed. A New Age inaterpretation of this transition is that this date marks the start of time in which Earth and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation, and that 2012 may mark the beginning of a new era. Others suggest that the 2012 date marks the end of the world. So as we expect ‘apocalypse’ 2012, one only wonders what happened to the predictions for year 2000!
2. 360 NOBS
Already becoming one of Nigeria’s more popular lifestyle sites, 360nobs.com will gain further ground in 2012 if it continues at a fast pace. Their music section and the popular ‘Memoirs of a Slush kid’ written by Noble Igwe should help 360 Nobs increase traffic and establish a loyal fan-base.
3. 9ICE
9ice will want to make his revival complete this year. With two new albums out, he’ll be gunning for a return to his ‘Gongo aso’ days. Expect a big push from the man who calls himself Basorun Gaa.
4. AFRICA NATIONS CUP
A lot of Nigerians might not be eagerly anticipating this event, expected to kick off in January, since the Super Eagles won’t be participating. Notwithstanding, the prestigious ‘African World Cup’ is expected to offer plenty of thrills and surprises with the participating nations.
5. ALJAZEERA
Apparently balanced and relatively fair in its reporting, the cable news channel is becoming a favourite for many Nigerians. And there’s the possibility of increased operations here, starting 2012…
6. APPLE
After founder Steve Jobs’ death, analysts are already discussing Apple’s future under Tim Cook’s leadership.  With new products on the way, Apple will position to create services that will dominate the IT world and consumer offerings that’ll syndicate more with multiple media. The much-talked-about iPad 3 is already on its way, but can they do it without Jobs?
7. BABA SUWE
After the whole NDLEA debacle last year, Baba Suwe is likely to only have one thing in mind and that is to re-launch his career. If he decides to shoot a movie based on his ordeal in the NDLEA office, he will definitely strike gold and have one of the most popular films of the year.
8. BANKY W
The suave and capable Empire Mates Entertainment Records boss, having had a fantastic 2011, has his eyes set on an even better 2012, which will witness the release of his album. Banky W recently released two singles off the forthcoming R&BW album titled ‘Setting P’ and ‘Low Key’. Along with his Samsung endorsement deal and being the major A&R brain behind EME, we expect the talented bachelor to have an unforgettable year.
